Candidate to challenge state Rep. Miller in primary

A 25-year-old Shrewsbury man is planning to run against Rep. Ron Miller, R-Jacobus, in this year’s primary election.
Republican Doug Walters said he’s worked since the fall of 2008 in the Southern York County School District as district technician, an job that includes overseeing computer services provided to students, parents, faculty and the public.
The married father of a 5-year-old daughter said he’s running because he’s concerned government has become too intrusive on the rights of citizens.
He said the country has developed into a “nanny state,” characterized by an overdependence on government to keep people fed, keep money in the banks and keep people from doing risky things.
“And our government does all these things by taxing us, by borrowing money from other countries, and worst of all by simply creating new money,” he wrote in an e-mail.
“I am running for office because people need to be made aware of these problems, and because people need to wake up and realize that if things keep going the way that they are, we are going to be in for a world of hurt.”
If elected, Walters said his priorities include eliminating the state’s debt, putting an end to the “nanny state” and getting rid of corrupt politicians.
His opponent: He also said Miller appears to have done little to improve Pennsylvania while in office for the past six terms.
Unlike Miller, Walters said he wouldn’t support a ban on the use of handheld cell phones while driving.

Miller and every other local state lawmaker voted in favor of the ban last month.
“I am not advocating texting or talking on the phone while driving, because it is an unsafe practice, but when we begin passing laws to ban ‘risky’
behavior we lose our right to make decisions,” Walters said. “There are better ways to spread ideals than by passing laws.”
Told about Walters’ candidacy, Miller welcomed him to the race.
Miller said he would comment further after the March 9 petition filing deadline.
Democrat Linda Small, office manager for the county’s Democratic Party, also is planning to run for Miller’s seat. She would face off in the general election against the winner of the primary.
The district includes Codorus, Manheim, Shrewsbury, Springfield and West Manheim townships, part of York Township and the boroughs of Dallastown, Glen Rock, Jacobus, Jefferson, Loganville, New Freedom, Railroad, Seven Valleys, Shrewsbury and Yoe.

First Comment! Booyah!
I am reading The 5000 Year Leap by Skousen. VERY interesting. More people should read this book. Glad you support these principles.
Great book…I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to gain a better understanding of what the Founding Fathers were thinking when they constructed the Constitution.
